Huntington's My Dog and I (1897), Arthur Craven's Dogs of the World (1931) and Walter Hutchinson's Hutchinson's Dog Encyclopaedia (1935). Known in Britain and America for decades as the Russian Wolfhound, the breed reached the West largely through imperial gifts - it could not, for most of its history, be bought - and Queen Alexandra's kennel at Windsor did the rest.
