She considers research in social history a kind of time travel and loves discovering details that help to unravel the often too easy explanations for mysteries obscured by the passage of time. Shirley lives in the Adirondack Mountains of New York State, where sufferers of tuberculosis once flocked to heal in the clean air, a place that is sometimes colder than Alaska.
