This second volume of Homes for Our Time documents a revolution. With photos, plans, and descriptions, it explores new approaches in building and presents resourceful and green private homes. Rejecting “stardom” but celebrating diversity, talents such as Suzuko Yamada, Gurjit Matharoo, and the collective Frankie Pappas truly build our future.

Climate, environment, history and technology are changing architecture worldwide. The continuation of the series Homes for Our Time documents a construction revolution. What role do private homes play in our vulnerable world? How do they continue to innovate?

In Sri Lanka, Palinda Kannangara created the Frame Holiday Structure with a budget of $40,000. Since the construction made of steel frame, exposed brick and wooden floors can be easily dismantled and moved to a new location, it adapts to the conditions of the nearby floodplain. Luciano Lerner Basso's Fortunata House also respects its surroundings: it was built around an endangered species tree and on stilts to protect the forest floor. Miller Hull's Loom House near Seattle was named the "world's greenest home renovation" due to its extensive use of recycled materials and efficient use of energy.

The history of modern architecture has so far been viewed primarily from a Western perspective and shaped by men. More than 60 structures in Vietnam, South Africa, India, China and other countries - designed by men, women and collectives - mean the end of this era. Gone are the days when one architectural style prevailed over all others. With photos by renowned architectural photographers, precise descriptions and drawings, Philip Jodidio maps the diverse and sustainable architecture of the future. The spectrum of residential buildings presented ranges from modest to extravagant. A beautiful house is always a dream come true - and this book invites you to dream.
