*Goldsmith, Oliver: * - Oliver Goldsmith (c. 1730-1774) was an Irish writer, poet, and playwright whose work occupies a central place in eighteenth-century literature. Known for his essays, poetry, and drama, he contributed to the revival of comic theatre through works such as She Stoops to Conquer, which rejected the prevailing sentimental style in favour of a more robust and observational form of comedy. His writing is distinguished by its clarity, balance, and enduring engagement with social life and character.
