In "Dear Enemy," Jean Webster crafts an epistolary novel that serves as both a poignant critique and a heartwarming exploration of early 20th-century education and social reform. Through a series of letters between Judy Abbott, a spirited orphan, and Dr. Glen C. Ford, the head of a reform school, Webster employs a witty and conversational style that draws readers into the characters' lives. The literary context of the novel is rooted in the Progressive Era, where themes of social justice, gender equality, and institutional critique resonate, making it a reflection on the evolving concept of childhood and education during this period. Jean Webster, an American author born into an affluent family, was deeply influenced by her own experiences with the educational system and her passion for social issues. She was a prominent advocate for children's rights and education reform, often drawing from her personal beliefs and experiences in her writing. Her works, including "Daddy-Long-Legs," showcase her keen insight into the struggles of young women and the importance of personal agency. "Dear Enemy" is a timeless tale that captivates both the heart and the mind. I highly recommend this novel to readers who appreciate character-driven narratives imbued with humor and social critique, as well as those who wish to explore the historical context of education reform and women's rights.
