African painting has boomed in recent years.

It reflects the self-awareness with which artists on the continent view themselves and their position in the world.

Collectors Carla and Pieter Schulting have assembled an extensive collection of paintings and more over the past five years, from all parts of Africa as well as the African Diaspora, offering insight into the diverse regions and cultures. Many of the artists in the collection take themselves or their immediate surroundings as subjects, producing portraits, figural works, and genre scenes. With a focus on young artists – most around 30 years old – this exhibition catalogue is a fascinating anthology of an emerging art scene.
